Map: Lost Lake and Black Magic

There are three races for the BC Champs weekend. The Long distance race starts and finishes at Passiv Haus. Runners will be challenged by a variety of terrain, long route choices, and of course a little bit of climb. The ultimate test of orienteering toughness. Water is provided on the course, but it is recommended that you take a gel or some other energy boost to keep you going over the long distance, especially if you plan to run the whole thing!

  • Where: Passiv Haus, Lost Lake, Whistler

  • What time: Meet at 12noon

  • Cost: Adult (19+) = $25, Junior (Under 19) = $15

  • What to bring: A compass (if you have one; we have rentals for $2), a Sport Ident stick (if you have one; we have rentals for $2)

  • What to wear: Dress as you would for a walk/run around Lost Lake! We recommend you have leg covering, just in case you decide to take a detour through some undergrowth! Wear shoes you don't mind getting muddy! We also recommend you bring a change of clothes for after the event.

  • How to register: Participants should register and pay in advance via Zone4. If you are planning to participate in the other races offered this weekend, please register for all the races at the same time via this link! There are limited on the day entries. Withdrawal Penalties: Until 11:59pm September 1st, full refund less $30 administration fee; until 11:59pm September 15th, 50% refund (minimum $30 withheld); September 16th onward, no refund

  • What to expect: There will be a separate registration area for newcomers, with a representative to talk you through what to do, where to go, and all that fun stuff! Look for the signs, or just ask. We're friendly people!

  • Amenities: Toilets and a snack bar are available at Passiv Haus!

  • NOTE: Participants must check in at the finish, even if they did not complete the course. Each participant report to the finish a maximum of 3 hours from their start time, even if they are not finished the course. This is a safety measure.

We recommend you register for one of the following 3 options:

  • Open Beginner - Point-to-point short course, where participants visit check-points in a specified order. Expect easy navigation and a course length of 1.5 - 2 km (takes ~30 minutes). This option is suitable for newcomers, individuals, pairs, and families.

  • Open Sport - 90 minute "scatter" format course (you choose the order and difficulty of the check-points you visit). Expect a mixture of easier and more difficult navigation. This option is suitable for older newcomers (individuals and pairs)

  • Open Advanced - This is a point-to-point course, with advanced technical difficulty, moderate length, and suitable only for experienced participants.

What is the difference between a point to point course and a "scatter" format course? - On a point to point course, the person who planned the course (the course planner) has indicated the order in which you will visit the check points. On a "scatter" course, there are a number of checkpoints marked on the map, and as the participant you choose how many and which controls to visit in the allocated time period.
